Lesson Horses

At Red Fern Farm, we offer some of the best horses for our students to ride.  We offer nearly 20 lesson horses available to cover a range from first time riders to seasoned competitors, with options to lesson, horse show, and lease available. Some program horses are also available for sale (only to a perfect home!). Whether your goal is to learn to jump, ride bareback, or learn balance and control, we have horses that anyone can enjoy!  Keep reading to learn more about some of the great horses in our program!

Bo

Bo is a 16 year old American Warmblood gelding.  He is graciously shared with our lesson program by our farm owner herself, Dianna! Bo has been there, done that, and is a great guy to learn the finer side of riding.  He is a master of lateral movement and transitions, and is wonderful at the jumps!

Mona

Mona is a lovely 6 year old mare showing promise in the hunter ring!  She has the personality of a German Shepherd, she LOVES attention!  This big ham has three lovely gaits, easy lead changes, and a correct and honest jump.  She is great for advanced students learning the finer side of developing a young horse.

Montana 

Montana is a great all around horse.  Montana was originally a trail horse that was shown to us by a 7 year old girl!  She rides both English and Western, and is turning out to be quite the jumping horse, currently schooling 2'6" jumps with ease.  She is great for riders working on their equitation and finesse with her smooth gaits and easy going personality.

Fern 

Fern participates in the RFF lesson program for advanced riders.  Fern is the namesake for the farm, and is truly a once-in-a-lifetime horse.  Fern is an off-track thoroughbred, and has been retrained for the hunters.  She is currently schooling fences at 3'6" with ease, and is leased through our show team to Lindsay. Fern is full of personality and focuses all her energy on her jumps.  She is the best of the best of OTTBs, with stunning movement through her shoulders and front end, careful jumping technique, willingness to please, and boldness to go galloping on the roads.  She is tons of fun for the skilled rider, whether you want to practice flying lead changes, equitation through gymnastics, or hunter/equitation coursework.

Opal

Opal is a 10 year old registered POA mare.  She is quickly becoming a favorite around the farm with her gentle personality and loud coloring, truly every kid’s dream pony!  At 14.1 hands, Opal is a perfect size for kids, juniors, and petite adults.

Hickory

Hickory is a 10 year old quarter horse pony. He is next to unbeatable in up to the 3’ jumpers. His small size and spectacular jump allows him to make “impossible” turns. He is great fun for advanced riders to learn a competitive edge on their courses.

Scout

Scout is a 20 year old quarter horse gelding.  Scout is an irreplaceable part of the family, he is our most experienced lesson horse and teaches everyone from their first ride through jumping 3' courses.  His gentle personality and steady ride make him a wonderful teacher and riding partner.

Sara 

Sara is a registered AQHA mare.  She is the world's best horse for beginner riders, kids, and confidence building.  Sara was bred and trained on George Straight's ranch in Texas, but loves her new life as a lesson and trail horse here in Colorado! She rides both English and Western and is a barn favorite.

Poppy

Poppy is a thoroughbred mare that has been spent most of her years in the hunter jumper world. She is a challenging ride and is best suited for intermediate to advanced riders.  Poppy is available for lease!

 

Bella

Bella is a 4 year old registered AQHA mare.  She stands approximately 15.3 and has a solid quarter horse build.  This young horse has a great brain and is working well for intermediate+ riders.  She is very willing to learn and has discovered a love for jumping! Bella is also a phenomenal trail horse and is as quiet as they come.

Star 

Star is a registered AQHA mare, originally trained as a cutting horse.  She is extremely responsive and smooth, making her tons of fun to ride! She has done both English and Western riding lessons since joining Red Fern Farm, and is so much fun on the trails as well.   

Mae 

Mae is a 7 year old registered American Quarter Horse.  She was broke early in her life and is a very educated ride for a young horse!  Even though her build is ideal for Western, Mae rides English as well, she really seems to enjoy jumping.  She is a great horse to learn soft contact and connection, as well as work on technical flatwork.  She is the clown of the pasture, loves hanging by the ring to watch lessons, and puts just about everything in her mouth!

Tiny 

Tiny is a 17.2hh 8 year old OTTB.  His last race was on Valentine's Day, 2017.  After a long journey Tiny is currently showing in the 3’6” jumper division, with plenty of potential to move up. He is currently leased by Micah, our beginner and weekend instructor.

 
 

Mango

Mango is a 14 year old Hanoverian cross mare. She is owned and shown by Eva, who allows her to participate in the lesson program while she is bringing up her next young jumper. Mango is a forward and sensitive ride, perfect to teach finesse to advanced riders.

Patch

Patch is a western pleasure horse turned English! His training background makes him ride very light and responsive, he is a great horse to learn leg cues, transitions, and lateral movements.  His smooth gaits make him a real pleasure to ride!

Jungle - Lesson Horse Angel

Jungle was our beloved old man. At 28 years old he was still so handsome when he passed away.  He was everyone's "first" horse and taught hundreds of students how to ride in his lifetime.  Jungle will always have a special place in our hearts.
